My friend posed this problem to me yesterday, and I have no idea what the answer is. There is a manometer, one of them with a U in the middle to find the pressure, and the middle has mercury in it. On one end is a complete vacuum, on the other end is a gas that we don't know (its a closed system). The mercury level in the manometer was 50 mm below normal, so the vacuum seemed to be pushing the mercury down 50 mm. What is the presure of the unknown gas?
