Teaching independence

Is teaching independence somewhat paradoxical? Whether for a child or a nation, the best way to assure effective autonomy may be learning from kind, consistent yet distanced examples. Both tutor and student can progress toward self-determination by an interrelation that respects each other as intellectually similar, but emulates eventual separateness. The lesson one understands best is like the freedom one achieves when fledged upon learning to bicycle -- self sufficiency nearby caring arms.
