The Letter A

Hey all. I just registered here to ask this question. I'm in physics class now, and it's over in 42 minutes, so a quick answer would be greatly appreciated.
We have to explain why the following experiment works.
A belt is hung on a piece of wood on one end, and on the other end, the wood rests on your finger. It's sorta hard to explain, but the wood is balanced when it seems like it shouldn't be. Has anyone heard of this experiment before? And if so, how does it work?
