Greetings,

I am in desperate need of some help. I have my exam final tomorrow morning and have just come across a difficulty which have been haunting me for the last two weeks, and will probably be haunting me tomorrow. The normal distribution or some call it the Gaussian distribution. I know that there are two tables for this distribution, table 1 the normal distribution function table where probabilities are in decimals and then table 2 percentage points of the normal distribution where the probabilities are in percentages. All my Maths teachers told me that there is nothing to worry about as we don’t use the percentage points table, that is however wrong, as I have found out several times. Here is my question.

When the information is given in percentages, am I or am I not suppose to use the table 2, the percentage points table? Just to clarify what I am talking about here is a sample question.

A group of students believe that the time taken to travel to college, T minutes, can be assumed to be normally distributed. Within the college 5% of students take at least 55 minutes to travel to college and 0.1% take less than 10 minutes.

Find the mean and standard deviation of T

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you in advance.
