Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the controversial methods of proving that bacteria, specifically H. pylori, cause stomach ulcers, including the extreme measure of consuming a pure bacterial culture. The scope includes ethical considerations in microbiological research and historical context regarding human experimentation.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants reference the historical context of H. pylori and its link to stomach ulcers, noting the skepticism faced by the initial hypothesis.
  • One participant suggests that drinking a bacterial culture is a daring move, questioning the ethics of such actions compared to involuntary testing on volunteers.
  • Another participant shares anecdotes from microbiology classes regarding the inoculation of food for inmates and testing vaccines on volunteers, highlighting ethical concerns.
  • There is a mention of the ethical implications of performing tests on involuntary volunteers, with one participant expressing that such practices are outright unethical.
  • Some participants engage in a light-hearted exchange about sarcasm and tone in written communication, indicating a shift in the mood of the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the ethics of consuming bacterial cultures for research purposes and the morality of historical human experimentation. There is no consensus on the appropriateness of these methods.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of detailed ethical guidelines discussed in the context of microbiological research and the varying interpretations of historical experiments.

How to prove that bacteria cause stomach ulcers:

Excerpt from Alberts et al. Molecular Biology of the Cell:
The hypothesis that stomach ulcers could be caused by a persistent bacterial infection of the stomach lining initially met with considerable skepticism. The point was finally proven by the young Australian doctor who made the initial discovery: he drank a flask of a pure culture of H. pylori and developed a typical ulcer.
this won't be my way of writing up a research plan..

Perhaps you could research the effects of massage on the levels of neurotransmitters this way?

*changed her mind*

When we take our introductary class to microbiology, in the section about food born disease we had a table with how many organism was necessary to cause disease. The prof said they would inoculated food for inmates.

Also in one of our class about virulence, they would test vaccine against gonorrhea by infecting volonteers with a virulent strain. the prof said "I can't believe they got volunteer for that".

There is more interresting story.

Performing such types of testing on involuntary volunteers is just outright unethical, that is why I though that drinking the culture yourself is rather a daring move.. crazy, but daring..

Um, you are a microbiologist.. right Ian? Um.. care for making a name?

the inmates new about the salmonella in their chicken but they had 50% of chance of not having any bacteria.

I am not that desperate yet anyway the guy will only be remember for drink bacteria and he is not the first one to do it.

Well if you are starting to see things in that light we can start a thread on all the horrific experiments that were carried out under Adolf Hitler's regime.

Gee.. someone is is a bad mood..

It is too bad that sarcasm is not well express in writting. I should of put a smilley at the end of my comment.
