I have a lab tomorrow that involves hydrogenation of 1-Octene to n-Octane using hydrogen with a platinum catalyst. I was wondering what is meant by the term precatalyst. There's question that asks how many moles of H2 are consumed by precatalyst H2PtCl6 in order to convert it entirely to platinum. I always thought that one mole of the catalyst was needed to hydrogenate each 1-Octene because one mole of H2 is needed to hydrogenate the double bond. Thanks.
