i heard when the skin is pierced by an iron filling it swell? is this true and if so y? [?]

It is true that it swells but not that much, i havev had quite a few iron filings in my fingers thanks to not caring where i put my hands. I think the only reason it swells is because....i dunno, i suppose it is like when you have a splinter.
