Field Quadratures

Hi,

This is possibly more of a electrodynamics question but what are electric field qudratures, and what significance do they bare in quantum optics? Everywhere I read they are two electric fields osciallating pi/2 out of phase but I thought in an EM wave there is just one electric field and one magnetic field.
