based on isotope abundances and other evidence
they describe a scenario, what a mythical observer on the earth
would have seen
(a Mars-size impactor collects at Lagrange point, then gets loose and falls toward earth)

and two dozen diagrams of orbits and stuff
very dull and tedious
but they answer the question
