My supervisor explained it as; a new OS comes out every 3-4 years, a new grad student comes along every 3-4 years - this is not a coincidence!

 It's sad how true that sounds. In my case, I'm the new faculty in the department, but it's essentially the same thing, teaching everyone else how to do things like...oh...animate text and illustrations in powerpoint. They think I'm a computer genius that I can do that. The really bad downside, though, is our two "computer" guys (one is our web developer, and the other is an instructional designer creating online learning tools for the students) have realized that I'm the only one whose eyes don't glaze over when they start talking, so every conversation I have with them ends up being an hour or longer. They seem so starved for someone to talk to who understands what they're saying! And, I really only understand about half of what they tell me, but it's more than anyone else (at least I can give them files in a format they can use and they only need to show me something once for me to do it myself).
