Bibtex reference in caption

I am using latex with bibtex to write my dissertation. I have some figures from other papers I need to reference. The problem I am having is that when I do this it screws up the numbering for my references. They are no longer in numerical order as is required by the university.

Anyone know how to get around this problem? Am I missing something obvious?
