THE United States would hand former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein over to the new Iraqi government for trial within two weeks, the country's interim prime minister Iyad Allawi said today.
Speaking on the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television channel, he said: "The transfer of Saddam Hussein and the others (former Iraqi leaders now in detention) will take place within two weeks.
"Yes, Saddam and the others will be handed over to the Iraqi government. Their trial will begin as soon as possible, god willing."
Earlier today, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Saddam must be freed or charged before the handover of power to Iraq's interim government on June 30.
A spokeswoman said holding Saddam without charge after the transfer of power from the US-led coalition would be against international humanitarian law.

"We're not making any ultimatums or calls for release," Notari said. "What we're saying is: Saddam Hussein, as far as we understand today, is a POW, prisoner of war, protected by the third Geneva Convention as all prisoners of war are.
"In theory, when a war ends and when an occupation ends, the detaining force has to release prisoners of war or civilian detainees if there are no reasons for holding them," she said.

From the frying pan into the fire, if he is handed over.
