Ha! This comic is funny...except he got it totally backwards. Maybe this is true for labs that don't get publicized very much.
In our lab the email goes something like. "I expect all of you to be present in the lab tomorrow when the film crew/senator/journalist is there." and our response is "Film crew/senator/journalist? How can I come up with an excuse to not be in the lab tomorrow..." or "...stupid people keeping us from doing our research..."
It's not uncommon to have people coming in to tour the lab to write articles or film video about our research, or just find out about what we're doing. The politicians aren't bad because they don't care about the grad students and ignore us and we can do our work. They just focus on the tour given by our PI or our lab manager.
The journalists/photographers/film crews are the worst because they want to interview you or take your picture...and it's hard to get work done, especially when you're on a time schedule. One time, our PI told us the day of, that a film crew was coming to the lab. They set up their equipment and everything, but I had to process my samples that day. So I had to work around their equipment (in the dark - because only their lights can be on). And in the end I didn't get to be on TV - just my PI. :(
I'm curious to see how this comic string will turn out... :D

It's fun watching the disappointment on their faces when they find how boring it is.
Why can't we see the laser beams? - cos we go to a lot of trouble to keep dust out of the optics lab.
Can we have a picture of you looking through the telescope instead of just sitting in front of a monitor? - erm no not really.
Do you have a movie of the expanding universe we can show? - so where would you like us to stand to take a picture of the universe. In the end they filmed the star field screen saver.

I laughed one time when some journalist/photographer visited a lab next to mine. Who ended up in the photos taken? The undergrad visiting for the summer. Why? They thought he looked most like a scientist...he was wearing a lab coat because he was totally inept and spilled everything, and was busy pipetting water because his pipetting skills were atrocious and he needed the practice before he was allowed to help on any actual experiments. He was pretty dorky looking too. The post-doc stuck supervising that particular nitwit (he probably still ranks as the worst undergrad I've ever encountered in a lab) was really ticked off that the student got his photo taken instead of him.
