Can anyone recommend good software for drawing and annotating crystal structures? Something that can do things like what is seen in Fig. 2 and 3 here: http://yclept.physics.ucdavis.edu/Publ/La422_prl.pdf
Specifically, I am interested in being able to draw arrows, the plaquettes of small clusters of atoms, and the annotations of the exchange constants that are shown there.

I'd prefer something free/open source, although I've tried xcrysden and gcrystal and neither are sufficient.

I have 3d software for this kind of thing (YBCO example) and you can use lots of arrows and captions:

Do you use a .pdb or .cif file for input? Perhaps send me a message if interested.

Have you tried VESTA?

Also, it might be a bit of a pain but you might could do something in OpenDX.
