View Full Version : why do people here think that I’m a guy?!

Gad
Oct5-09, 12:32 AM
now it doesn’t bother me, but why do they instantly assume whoever is helping them with their home work is a guy? and I’m thinking this is not my problem alone, is it?

why does the word racist come to mind!! :grumpy:

GeorginaS
Oct5-09, 12:37 AM
"Racist" because they assume you're male? How about "sexist"? Being male or female isn't a race.

My guess? (Because I too assumed you were male and you haven't even helped me with my homework.) Because you have a gender-neutral name. And given that there are far more males on this board than females, as a shot in the dark, it's fair to assume that you'd be male rather than female just based on percentages.

What is the context of this gender referencing? Notice in English that the male third person pronoun is usually used as a gender neutral third person pronoun also

Gad

Maybe they think you're male because...let's face it, the vast majority of physicists are male. Heck, out of forty professors in my department, only 2 are female. Off hand I can only think of one American female grad student in my department, and that's out of 100!

If it makes you feel better, some people think I'm female simply because my user name ends in an a. I only use it because an old ISP gave it to me, based on my first name (Arun) and a couple of random letters.

Drizzle seems sort of masculine to me, or at least reminds me of "fo shizzle" which reminds me of young guys coming up with silly 'ebonics' type words.

I have an online friend whom I thought was female when I first started talking to him because his name seemed feminine (apparently a lot of people thought so). The fact that he was talking about kissing cute boys in the first blog post of his I read didn't help much either.

I have long learnt to not assign any sex to any nicks - especially as intuition from Polish is different from intuition in English.

But nicks are usually not designed to reveal the sex, so this is not a problem. Problems start when I see the real name and I have no idea if it is feminine or masculine.

Just for the record, I agree that your username is rather gender neutral and I can imagine that people conveniently assume that you are therefore a male.
On the other hand, is it really relevant? If it bothers you that people say "thank you sir" (which, I must admit, bothers me a little too just because it makes me feel so old :) ) you can change your username into something more intrinsically female. But then again people may also look upon you differently as a person, as seems to happen sometimes to girls in (some areas of) science.

Speaking of unfounded prejudices, I always have this irrational feeling that people that say "sir" are from India

I like Kimberly name.

My favorite female name is Ephemerides.

Funny how names are generational. Names that used to be popular seem strange and unfamiliar. And names that were once 'old people' names are popular baby names again (I guess once those particular people died, some names lost their unpopularity).

Alas, Ephemerides hasn't been in the top 1000 most popular names in at least a century (and probably longer).

Gender neutrual on a homework help forum isn't all bad, though. As some have mentioned, there is a surprise at females being in a math or science oriented field. One of the professors ran into this when she entered the classroom only minutes before the start of class. Being a slightly youngish looking blonde (unless you look closely), one the more helpful male students told her kindly she must be in the wrong classroom, because this class was Calculus. Nice way to get on the good side of your professor!

Funny tales of misogyny aside, it's just a English caveat to refer to someone you don't know as male, especially if the place in which said person is found happens to be a forum with mostly male members.

That said, I think my username clears it up nicely.

I picked my name because I was defending my phd the week I joined up (PF is a great procrastination place)... and when I thought about emailing Greg to switch and was thinking about a poll to decide on one, everyone was saying they liked pgp... and I'm inherently lazy, so it's stayed. It's interesting how we assign gender to words for things without a gender. I always was fascinated when learning foreign languages that a table might be female and a chair male, or vice versa. Yet, indeed, the word "drizzle" seemed masculine to me too, even though it should be entirely gender neutral.

But, if people are calling you sir, and it's not just that they are taking a guess at the pronouns "he" vs. "she", then it's more likely you have encountered another non-native English speaker who is just trying to be polite without fully being aware there is a different word than "sir" when addressing a female.

I used to have the same thing happen all the time when I joined up. Oddly enough, it stopped around the time I got the sniper kitty avatar. Apparently, sniper kitties are clearly female. Or maybe the kitty just takes out anyone who would dare call me "sir."

Maybe drizzle should glue a pink bow on her head, as seems requisite in childbirth wards to distinguish gender, even though, as moonbear's pointed out in past threads, it's a simple matter of peeking in the diaper to determine gender.

Kind of like Schrodinger's Dog, except even stranger. Bird people are twice as strange as crazy cat ladies.

My brother's a bird person... and yeah, he's missing some marbles. I think his new girlfriend is helping him find them though.

For the most part, the more colorful and flamboyant birds are the males. Chickadees and phoebes are unisex (in dress), but many songbirds have very bland-looking females (to be less conspicuous on-nest) and very bright males to claim, defend and hold territory.

And, no, even though I hand-feed wild birds and chipmunks, I'm not as crazy as a cat-lady. I'm just being really practical. Most of my pets are wild and they fend for themselves and I don't have to clean up after them.

And, no, even though I hand-feed wild birds and chipmunks, I'm not as crazy as a cat-lady. I'm just being really practical. Most of my pets are wild and they fend for themselves and I don't have to clean up after them.

I used to handfeed a squirrel that hung out on my porch. I later found out he'd been fed by a neighbor before he ran up her skirt -- putting an end to her feedings! By the time I was feeding him, he was in old age, and such antics were beyond him.

Some of the old-timers will scale me as soon as they see me and start searching my pockets for treats.

I have a cat (as evidenced by my avatar), but when I was "playing the dating game" I always made sure to say "I have a cat, but I'm NOT a crazy cat lady." Unfortunately, I think two of my better friends have become crazy cat ladies.
My whole goal is to become the crazy cat lady. Though, I have a neighbor who was out walking his cat a couple weeks ago (late at night when most people wouldn't notice, except a fellow whacko like me). I'm annoyed by that. It greatly challenges my status as the crazy cat lady. I might just be the slightly nutty cat lady.

Birds have mixed up sex chromosomes don't they moonie?

should have kept it that way...now you're really going to meet sexism .. if not at the very least nerd bias . . .

simple as this>> no gurlz on interbuttzzz. ..

generally thought of as a boys club...but I'd say the internet is for androgynous avatars generally . .

edit::puh...or mebe I walked right in to troll attempt??? D;

Its supposed to be "There are no girls on the internet" and its an old joke pretty much saying that if you are talking to a 'girl' on the internet it is probably a guy. It doesn't have anything to do with a 'boys club' or anything like that.

Hand feeding squirrels is simply providing a training program for muggers. Squirrels become incredibly demanding. Thanks to the squirrels, having foxes move in next door becomes very desirable, indeed!

I have to admit presenting a challenge to competing Gray Jays and a chipmunk was an entertaining way to spend last Saturday. Gray Jays are naturally very bold. One took food from us with practically no hesitation. It didn't take long for the second to decide that was the way to go. The chipmunk became very frustrated when we stopped tossing food and started waiting for him to come take it from our hand. Eventually, he got tired of the Jays always taking the food and mustered up the courage to come get some food.

It made for some good photo opportunities for other hikers (it was a busy day on the mountain trail we picked and most dally about at the top of the trail, eating lunch, etc).

It probably didn't make for good nutrition since the only thing we had to feed the Jays and chipmunks were Garden Salsa Sun chips.

I used to hand-feed both chipmunks and squirrels when I was a teen. When the squirrels didn't get their peanut fix, they resorted to breaking and entering, which led to my mom officially banning the practice of hand-feeding squirrels. I always kept the peanut jar near the back door, and during summer when there was only the screen door closed, a squirrel decided to chew through the screen and raid the jar. I had all the squirrels and chippy's trained, even a few blue jays would play "fetch" for peanuts, catching them mid-air. Oh, to have entire summers of free time to train the backyard critters again!

AHAHAHAHA HAHA! You fool. You fell right into my trap!

There are only two rules of engagement:

The first is 'never get involved in a land war in Asia', and the second is 'never bet against an Irishman when bikinis are on the line'.

I had my arm amputated and preserved years ago in preparation for just such a wager.

I've just eaten a scoop of ice cream using my elbow as a spoon.

Now cough up, sister.

Sorry!
