String theory apparently produces noncommutative field theories in some limits. Noncommutative field theories tend to break Lorentz invariance. Why doesn't this occur in the sort of noncommutative field theories that come from string theory?

Also, within string theory are such theories thought to be useful for modelling, or are they just mathematical curiosities?
