What exactly is Spherical Harmonics

What is Spherical Harmonics. Yeah I know its the solutions to Laplace equation, yeah yeah. But what IS it? What does it describe? Can you describe it in a way that doesn't involve math? If a particle rotates in three dimensions according to the spherical harmonics equations, what does that even mean?
