Birkeland currents

Hi, i was just wondering whether anyone could briefly explain Birkeland currents to me, in relation to the Earth's magnetosphere.

I'm just looking into aurora and i'm finding it hard to visualise how they are orientated and the effect they have on the plasma.

Any help would be appreciated!
