About 10^6 electon-ion pairs are produced by a charged particle traversing a counter. If typical ionization potential of the medium is I = 30eV, in principle, how well can you measure the deposited energy using a Geiger counter, an ionization counter with a gain of unity, and a proportional counter with a gain of 10^6 that has gain variations of 5%?
