I have uploaded to the ArXiV a small historical note on the apparition of the factor (D-2)/26 in Connes' theorem for commutative spectral triples. It is available not at hep-th, but at http://arxiv.org/abs/physics/0409022
It could be of some interest to the newsgroup. Sometimes it has been tried to build an spectral triple from strings, and it seems sensible to check if these triples have a commutative limit.
