TORONTO (CP) - Former Rogers Cable CEO John Tory was named the new leader of Ontario's Opposition Conservatives late Saturday, in a move that signals the party's shift to the centre.

Tory won the leadership over two Mike Harris loyalists, suggesting the party is ready to take a more centrist approach as it tries to rebuild voter support in advance of the next provincial vote.

"I look forward to having both these gentlemen as partners as we rebuild and renew this party and get ready to defeat (Liberal Premier) Dalton McGuinty and the rest of his band of Liberals in 2007," Tory said in his victory speech at about midnight after results were delayed due to voting complications.

"For our party, this is the end of the beginning. For Dalton McGuinty today marks the beginning of the end," Tory said.

"This guy is gone."

The provincial party was decimated by Ontario's Liberals almost a year ago under the leadership of Ernie Eves and after eight years in government implementing an aggressive agenda of tax and spending cuts.

I know a guy who met John Tory and talked to him. He's a nice guy, and I hope he him success.

I've also heard that his long-time goal is to be Prime Minister, and a long time ago that he was actually Liberal.
