The idea is good, space-time should in fact
emerge through a kind of process. The article
itself is moderate. There are some simulations,
but what exactly do they prove ? I am not
convinced that "Causal Dynamical Triangulations"
are the right way to construct and formulate a new
theory of Quantum Gravity.
The relation to String Theory and Loop Quantum
Gravity (LQG) is not worked out in detail.
I can not get rid of the impression that it is only
published in Phys. Rev. Lett. because the title
sounds interesting and there are some serious
looking charts in it. Maybe one of the authors knows
one of the editors personally.

What do you gravity experts think of:
Emergence of a 4D World from Causal Quantum Gravity
J. Ambj=F8rn, J. Jurkiewicz, and R. Loll
Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 131301 (2004)
24 Sep 2004

there was discussion of that paper here:
http://physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=25102
the preprint is online here:
http://www.arXiv.org/abs/hep-th/0404156
John Baez featured the paper in "this week's finds---week #206"
http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/week206.html
Baez: "...In particular, I spend a lot of time giving a very simple nontechnical introduction to the recent work of Ambjorn, Jurkiewicz and Loll in which they seem to get a 4d spacetime to emerge from a discrete quantum model - something that nobody had succeeded in doing before!"
there was an enlightening discussion of the paper on SPR in an exchange between John Baez and Thomas Larsson, but I dont have the link to it handy.
Some followup research has been posted in preprint form. I dont have the link handy but Smolin, Markopoulou, Dreyer recently posted a preprint about dynamical triangulation approach in the "Emergence of..." paper you mention.
Here are links to the exchange between Baez and Larsson, about
the Ambjorn/Jurkiewicz/Loll paper
