Coherent light from a laser is split into two beams with intensities 16I0 and 2.25I0, respectively. What is the range of possible light intensities when the beams are recombined?
2. Relevant equations
A = sqrt(I)k; I = (A/k)^2
3. The attempt at a solution
A1 = sqrt(16)k = 4k; A2 = sqrt(2.25)k = 1.5k
sum = 5.5k ==> Imax = (5.5k/k)^2 = 30.25
difference = 2.5k ==> Imin = (2.5k/k)^2 = 6.25
