View Full Version : Transmission and reflection by cholesteric liquid crystals

I have read numerous books on these crystals, but none seem to explain exactly what is happening here. I am interested in what causes a right-circularly polarised wave to be reflected by a right-handed cholesteric liquid crystal? Similarly, why is a left-circularly polarised wave transmitted? What happens to the photons in these cases?

Thanks.
