View Full Version : Function of polysaccharide(?) chains attached to cells

Hi, I wondered what the current view is on these structures:
From what I've heard, these chains are crucial for recognition purposes, but they are "so huge" (compared to the actual cell), that I wonder if these structures might be of importance on several other areas as well.
My own dumb thoughts:
1. "Stabilization" of tissue?
2. "Guidance" functions for nutrients?
These ideas are probably laughable for any knowledgeable person, so I'd like some expert input on this..
