I am reading a physics book and I keep seeing a notation like:

I am somewhat familiar with lagrangian mechanics and hamilton's principle, I remember reading a while back that this is some kind of notation for "variation". Could anyone clarify for me what the definition of this is? Or what it is supposed to imply? Thanks.
