1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data
There is a set of reactions in my organic chemistry homework assignment that just don't make sense to me. Or at least the answers provided by the answer key don't seem to be correct. Each one is a different carboxylic acid being reacted with SOCl2 and benzene, as the solvent. I understand that the thionyl chloride will turn the acid into an acid chloride, but won't the benzene react with this in a second step to get the Friedel-Crafts acylation product?

For example, one of the reactions shows cyclohexanecarboxylic acid reacted with thionyl chloride and benzene. The answer key shows the corresponding acid chloride, and nothing else. So what's right? Me or the book?


EDIT: Nevermind. Initially, I hadn't realized that you don't have any kind of Lewis acid present, like AlCl3 to catalyze the Friedel-Crafts reaction.
