Does anyone have any idea why DC is so fervently Democratic?

Both of those sites have DC going for Kerry by over 70%.
Plus, DC has voted Democratic every election since at least 1980. DC voted for Carter over Reagan, voted for Mondale over Reagan, voted for Dukakis over Bush...
I got about 4 hours of sleep last night, and I'm pretty sure that I'm running on adrenaline only right now, so I really have no idea where that 84% figure came from, please excuse me.

DC is the only "state" that is over 80% black (traditionally Democrats), and the whites there tend towards tolerance (i. e., liberalism). I live in Arlington, across the Potomac, where our electorate approaches 2/3 Democratic. We are quite cosmopolitan - for instance, some elementary schools here represent over 60 languages.

Black population, gay community, and a multicultural, urban demographic who understand politics.

Prabably from electoral-vote.com (http://www.electoral-vote.com/pred/index.html) or some place that quoted their number.
