AP Physics question & its problems solving...

I am a senior student who is already taking AP physics. I am not sure hw I should study the AP physics materials. my brother said i should understand not memorize. I can't seem to understand how people solve the relative motion for example measuring the time of which a person throw from a car 1 to car 2, which is moving in opposite direction with different magnitude.

There seems to be some sense of logic required in solving physics.
Further more, WHY is Kinetics so important? It's like 35% of the AP Physics test.. And I don't like the critical questions where only 3-5 questions exist and you have two choice. It's seems unfair to measure student's knowledge through that limited quesiton. Besides, the critcal part is 50% and if I screw on it, I get maximum of 50%. It's a non sense (as far as I believe).
