I don't get it. To my knowledge, this does not happen in math. The contrary joke in math is the thesis advisor who is getting flack about the flaws in his student's thesis, and finally, unable to take it any more says: "Ok, so this isn't the best thesis I've ever written!"

Of course it all depends on your perspective and I can imagine that to a student with little experience, any request seems like a huge imposition, not realizing how much an average faculty member does regularly.

Apologies for a potential buzzkill: obviously I've forgotten in 35 years what it was like as a student.
