I'm new here and new to high level physics as well. What does research
say about having optical logical gates using lasers and crystals? Can
total internal reflection of a modulated beam not be used for storage
of bits? What about simple processing by adding two beam signals
together for an AND or OR gate?

Optical logic gates are certainly possible and were demonstrated in the
1980s using third-order nonlinear optical materials e.g. InSb at quite
modest laser intensities. There was a lot of hype at the time about how
this was the way forward and would supersede electronics. I'm not quite
sure why it didn't happen, but perhaps the problem was the system
constraints and required dimensional precision.
