Simulation HELP

Hello;

I am a material engineer. I am planning to step inside simulation area and i am looking for suitable programs.

The thing is i am trying to build a ballistic simulation. For example a lead bullet hitting a ceramic or metal surface.

Now can anybody help me to start this self-education ? Can you tell me where to start? what to read and what programs should i use?
