Distance measurement and identification

Hi,

I am thinking of building a system for tracing soccer players and measuring their speed.
Would anyone happen to know how these systems are made?

More generally speaking, is there a way of measuring distance accurately with as small transponder as possible?


Any thoughts would be welcome!
