SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the radical ideas proposed regarding dark matter and dark energy in cosmology, particularly the notion that these two entities may transform into one another. A contributor expresses skepticism about the existence of dark energy and dark matter while acknowledging the potential value of unconventional theories in advancing the field. The mention of a researcher from Krakow's "Center for Complicated Systems" highlights the ongoing debate about the validity of these concepts, with a call for testable predictions to substantiate such radical claims.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of dark matter and dark energy concepts
  • Familiarity with cosmological theories and models
  • Knowledge of the scientific method and hypothesis testing
  • Awareness of the history of cosmology and significant theories like MOND
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the implications of dark matter and dark energy transformations
  • Explore the concept of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) and its critiques
  • Investigate recent papers from the Center for Complicated Systems in Krakow
  • Learn about observational methods for measuring surface brightness in galaxies
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, cosmologists, and researchers interested in theoretical physics and the fundamental questions surrounding dark matter and dark energy will benefit from this discussion.

this seems crazy to me
and I refuse to spend another minute on it.

however, maybe cosmology as a field needs to be periodically shaken up
by crazy-sounding ideas. Does this fill the bill?

my personal view is I am skeptical that dark energy and dark matter even exist. but here is somebody in Krakow (at the "Center for Complicated Systems" or some such institution) who believes that indeed not only do they both exist but one may transform itself into the other, and so on...

Hmmm. I think it's pretty radical, but possible. It's too ad hoc to suit my taste [like MOND], but testable predictions might sweeten it up. One thing I find very troubling is the apparent low surface brightness of galaxies at the same distance as the high z supernova. I can look up the paper if anyone cares to kick it around. Coincidences make me nervous.
