Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around NASA's initiative to send names to Pluto, drawing comparisons to previous similar projects. Participants explore the implications of this idea, including its significance and the motivations behind it.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express enthusiasm for the idea of sending names to Pluto, likening it to previous initiatives with Martian rovers and Deep Impact.
  • Others suggest that the act may be somewhat egotistical, questioning the value of achieving immortality through a simple online submission.
  • A participant draws a parallel to the Pioneer plaque, suggesting that while the name may not be found, it represents a long-lasting legacy.
  • There is a sentiment that the initiative could engage children and spark interest in space science, with some participants admitting they find it enjoyable as well.
  • One participant reflects on their previous experience of submitting their name to the Deep Impact mission, noting the irony of that name being destroyed upon impact.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally express mixed feelings about the initiative, with some appreciating its novelty and others critiquing its implications. There is no clear consensus on the motivations or significance of the project.

Contextual Notes

Some participants highlight the irony of achieving recognition through minimal effort, while others question the long-term impact of such initiatives. The discussion does not resolve these nuances.

Who May Find This Useful

Ever had a burning desire to send your name to Pluto? Well now you can, thanks to the latest PR idea at NASA- http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/ecard/sendName_ecard_content.html
The idea is similar to the one where you could send your name on the Martian Rovers/ on Deep Impact if anyone participated in those.

Neat idea, a little egotistical perhaps, but neat idea.

Isn't it rather ironic that one can seal their name for practically an eternity while sitting at a computer, no matter what they did in life? All those years trying to accomplish something to make a name of yourself and it is eclipsed by <5 minutes of effort at that site. :-p

Kind of like putting that plaque on pioneer. Not like anybody is likely to actually find the thing, but it will be around for a very long time. Think of it as a cheap bid for immortality. Perhaps it will crash into Mars after the sun goes nova and intelligent life evolves on mars. Primitive sentients may conclude the symbol 'Jorge Matus' is the name of an ancient god and worship you for centuries.

I put my name on the Deep Impact CD, which may be anti-egotistical/self-abasing since that CD will be utterly destroyed a few months from now when it smacks into the comet.
