View Full Version : Mass defect and gravitational potential energy

Sorry if this is a silly question, but it's been bugging me.

If you have a mass, and do work against a gravitational field, it gains gravitational potential energy. Now, if that mass is a nuclear bomb and you detonate it, it loses mass (albeit a tiny amount) which is released as energy.

What happens to the gravitational potential energy tied to the mass that disappears?

Thanks.
