Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around identifying famous short story authors from countries outside of England, France, Ireland, Scotland, and North America. Participants explore various authors from different cultural backgrounds and time periods.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants mention Alexander Kielland as a notable Norwegian author, part of the "Great Four" alongside Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Jonas Lie.
  • Others highlight Kjell Askildsen as a contemporary Norwegian writer of short stories.
  • Lu Xun is proposed as a significant Chinese writer from the early twentieth century, with references to his influential works.
  • Some participants suggest poets instead of short story authors, mentioning figures like Dante, Virgil, and Homer.
  • Additional Norwegian authors such as Olaf H. Hauge, Rolf R. Jacobsen, Stein Mehren, and Jan Erik Vold are listed by participants.
  • Anton Chekhov is noted as a foundational figure in the contemporary short story genre, with a reminder of Nikolai Gogol's contributions as well.
  • Salman Rushdie is also mentioned as a relevant author in this context.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present a variety of authors from different countries, but there is no consensus on a definitive list or criteria for selection. The discussion remains open-ended with multiple viewpoints expressed.

Contextual Notes

Some contributions focus on authors from specific countries, while others diverge into poetry, indicating a potential ambiguity in the original request regarding the genre.

Alexander Kielland, very famous in Norway.
He lived in Ibsen's time, and is one of the "Great Four" of that time
(The other two were Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Jonas Lie)

Kjell Askildsen is a highly acclaimed present day writer of short stories.

You can read English translations of some of his stories here. Try the one called "My Old Home":

How about Dante (Italian), Virgil (Roman), or Homer (Greek)? C'mon, these are too easy.

Olaf H. Hauge, Rolf R. Jacobsen, Stein Mehren, Jan Erik Vold...

Don't forget about Antonin Pavlovich Chekhov, one of the fathers of the contemporary short story.

And by that, I remembered the Russian grandfather of short stories, Gogol..

Salman Rushdi...
