About a month and a half ago in the Yukon River village of Ruby, word began circulating about a swath of trees the size of a football field, some with trunks as big as 55-gallon barrels, that had mysteriously snapped off on an island nine miles upstream.

Discovery Channel, or History,or Learning Channel, just reaired their documentary about the Japanese meteorologist who first proved the existence of microbursts. Fascinating stuff.

What was of particular interest was the fact that it is a completely natural and scientifically provable phenomenon which happens quite frequently, yet no one had identified and defined it before this Japanese man. At the time he did some of his most important work on it, the national Weather service was hard at work trying to ascribe the same effects to some other cause.
