Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the claim that Mars will appear as large as a full moon from Earth in the near future, with participants exploring whether this assertion is a hoax or a misunderstanding. The scope includes conceptual clarification and debate regarding astronomical observations and public misconceptions.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that the claim about Mars appearing as large as the full moon is incorrect, stating that it will never happen.
  • Others propose that the claim may stem from a misunderstanding, suggesting that Mars could appear as large as the moon through a telescope, but not to the naked eye.
  • A participant references previous misunderstandings about Mars' appearance, indicating a pattern of similar claims circulating in the past.
  • Another participant expresses skepticism about the claim being a mere mistake, suggesting it could be a repeat of a previous hoax.
  • Some comments highlight the role of misinformation spread via the internet, implying that the claim is part of a broader issue with public understanding of astronomy.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally disagree on whether the claim is a hoax or a misunderstanding, with some asserting it is incorrect while others suggest it reflects a common misconception rather than intentional deception.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the nature of the claim and its origins, as well as the definitions of "hoax" and "misunderstanding." The discussion does not clarify the specifics of how Mars' appearance is perceived through different observational methods.

someone told me that in the near future we'd be able to see Mars as the size of a full moon from earth. later i read it was just a hoax. anyone else heard about this?

Haven't heard it, but it's definitely wrong. Mars will never look as big as the full moon from Earth.

It means if you look at Mars through a 75x telescope that it will appear as big "in the telescope" as the moon does to the naked eye. Not a hoax just people leaving out important details.

I have my doubts about it being a mistake - its a repeat of a misunderstanding from just two years ago, spread by email. I think it's a decent chance that its another "Good Times" hoax.

Ya I got this email too.

Doesn't take an astronomer to realize it's wildly inaccurate.
