If you can remove the lens safely and ensure that it will be reinstalled with some semblance of collimnation, you should flush the lens with a 50:50 solution of distilled water and isoppropyl alcohol. This cleaning solution is cheap and easy to make, so use plenty of it, and use a gentle touch with clean optical tissue (not regular "blow-your-nose" stuff that is loaded with harsh abrasives).
