Battleground states, 2008
Update 11/4/2008
Afternoon of Election Day
A final look at the battleground states!
Most notable are the Top 6 in this list, which altogether account for 97 electoral votes.
Georgia, which had been leaning toward McCain, is new to the list this time.
New Mexico (5 EV) and New Hampshire (4 EV) also had a BS of 2.0.Code:State EV BS 1 Florida 27 6.0 2 Ohio 20 6.0 3 Missouri 11 6.0 4 North Carolina 15 5.0 5 Virginia 13 4.0 6 Indiana 11 4.0 7 Mont & N.Dak 3+3 3.5 each 8 Georgia 15 3.0 9 Colorado 9 3.0 10 Nevada 5 3.0 11 Pennsylvania 21 2.0 12 Minnesota 10 2.0 12 Wisconsin 10 2.0
The top 10 entries in the list all voted for George W. Bush in 2000 & 2004.
Montana and North Dakota have been combined as a single entry.Posted Nov4-08 at 02:25 PM by Redbelly98

Battleground states, 2008
Update 10/31/08
Here is the last of my weekly updates on swing states. If I have time, I will make a final update on Monday, the night before the election.
The top four swing states remain from last week: Florida, Ohio, Missouri, and North Carolina.
While low on the list, I will be watching Pennsylvania. It has a whopping 21 electoral votes, and McCain has been campaigning heavily there in the past week.Code:State EV BS 1 Florida 27 6.0 2 Ohio 20 6.0 3 Missouri 11 6.0 4 North Carolina 15 5.0 5 Indiana 11 4.0 6 North Dakota 3 3.5 7 Virginia 13 3.0 8 Colorado 9 3.0 9 Nevada 5 3.0 10 Montana 3 3.0 11 Pennsylvania 21 2.0 12 Minnesota 10 2.0 12 Wisconsin 10 2.0
New to the Top 12 are North Dakota and Montana, though with just 3 electoral votes apiece it is rather difficult to get excited about them.
Receiving a BS of 2.0 are Iowa (7 electoral votes), New Mexico (5) and New Hampshire (4).
It is worth mentioning that John McCain's home state of Arizona (10 electoral votes) has now entered the swing-state discussion. It currently has a BS of 1.5.Posted Oct31-08 at 07:48 PM by Redbelly98

The Dow, 2008 vs. 1987 vs. 1929 (as of 12 Aug. 2010)
28 Oct. 2008 ↔ 15 Nov. 1929
As of this point during the 1929 crash, the markets were just entering a period of stability followed by growth. This would last through April of 1930, after which the market would again start falling.Posted Oct29-08 at 04:17 PM by Redbelly98

Battleground states, 2008
Update 10/26/08
The same swing states make the "Top 12" as a week ago, with some change in the ordering. Of note is Virginia's drop from #5 to #9, as it leans closer to Obama.
Note: Also getting a Battleground Score of 2.0 were New Mexico (5 Electoral Votes), West Virginia (5 EV), and New Hampshire (4 EV). They are excluded from the Top 12 because of their low Electoral Vote numbers.Code:State EV BS 1 Florida 27 6.0 2 Ohio 20 6.0 3 Missouri 11 6.0 4 North Carolina 15 5.0 5 Colorado 9 4.5 6 Nevada 5 4.0 7 Indiana 11 3.5 8 Pennsylvania 21 2.0 9 Virginia 13 2.0 10 Minnesota 10 2.0 10 Wisconsin 10 2.0 12 Iowa 7 2.0

Battleground states, 2008
Update 10/17/08
I've looked at more recent polls and recompiled the list. Also added CNN to the source list, so the Battleground Score (BS) is now on a 0-to-6 scale.
Iowa has replaced Michigan among the Top 12 battleground states, which now total 159 electoral votes.Code:State EV BS 1 Florida 27 6.0 2 Ohio 20 6.0 3 Missouri 11 5.5 4 North Carolina 15 5.0 5 Virginia 13 4.0 6 Colorado 9 4.0 7 Nevada 5 4.0 8 Pennsylvania 21 3.0 9 Indiana 11 3.0 10 Minnesota 10 3.0 11 Wisconsin 10 2.0 12 Iowa 7 2.0
Among other states, Obama has 216 votes and McCain has 165, so:
Obama needs 54 swing-state electoral votes
McCain needs 107 swing-state electoral votes

Battleground states, 2008
In terms of tracking results on election night, I plan to follow the 12 swing states. Here is where the candidates stand right now, if we assume the other states are pretty well locked in for one candidate or the other:
Obama has 206 electoral votes so far
McCain has 163 electoral votes so far
This means that, to win:
Obama needs 64 swing-state electoral votes
McCain needs 107 swing-state electoral votes
Note: 113 of the 169 swing-state votes are in the Eastern time zone, and another 42 are in Central time. So this could be over early.Posted Oct16-08 at 06:41 PM by Redbelly98
