More resistors and an uncaring student.

More resistors. Passed out 10 resistors to each student, they taped 6 of them with leads exposed to a sheet of paper. They decode the value, later they will use a DMM to compare a measured value.

There is one student who seems not to be interested in anything. I was attempting to help him but he pretty much ignored me. He would turn around and pester the kid behind him, he would ask totally unrelated off topic questions. It is not clear to me whether he is worth my time. There are...

Quiz day

Posted Sep22-09 at 11:13 PM by Integral

After the quiz we talked about resistance. Introduced as "slowing electrons". The teacher also spoke of the electrons moving at the speed of light, I let this error go as simply not important at this point in time. We then worked more with color coding (decoding?) resistors.

I am hoping to start helping in a Math class soon. I have talked to the principle about it, but that is moving slow. The electronics teacher says the best way to do it is go directly to a teacher and...

Classroom experiences.

Posted Sep22-09 at 12:17 PM by Integral

I trying to record my classroom experiences and impressions here. One thing I want to chart is the sequence that the material is presented. I am helping in a Intro to Electronics course at a high school level. So we have a very irregular level of Mathematical sophication. Ohm's Law is a challenge for most. The current lesson plan does not present Ohm's Law until late in the term. Yesterday we did a review in preparation for a quiz today. They need to now:
1. Where do electrons come from?...

Should I go into teaching?

Posted Sep19-09 at 02:18 PM by Integral

So I think I want to start blogging. Last spring I was laid off after 13 yrs as a well paid technician with HP. I am now living on unemployment and trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. While I am not happy about having to find a new career at 59, I have no choice in the matter.

For the last 2 years I have been volunteering at the local high school helping with the electronics class and as a mentor for the FIRST robotics team. I find that I enjoy working with...
