Atomic Binding energy/Cohesive energy?

I want to understand what the binding energy is. I read it in some papers on contacting metal to carbon nanotube or graphene. They discuss that the metal-carbon binding energy is minimum for a specific distance between metal atoms and carbon atoms.

But, how do I calculate that binding energy? Could you refer me to a comprehensive reference?

Thanks
