Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for reference books suitable for undergraduate physics students. Participants explore various options and clarify the specific needs of the requester, including the scope of topics covered.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests Roger Penrose's book, "The Road to Reality," as a decent reference that includes extensive citations, although it is noted to be somewhat expensive.
  • Another participant questions the specific focus of the reference book, asking whether it should cover the entire undergraduate curriculum or just specific areas.
  • A different participant proposes that the requester may be looking for a reference guide tailored for senior-level physics courses.
  • There is a suggestion to consider the field of interest, with a recommendation for Resnick and Halliday for general physics knowledge.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a single recommended book, as they express varying interpretations of the requester's needs and preferences.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the specificity of the request for a reference book, including the lack of clarity on which areas of physics are of interest and whether the focus is on general knowledge or specific advanced topics.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reference book for an undergraduate student in physics? So far, I've read about these two but it's hard to decide:

Any suggestions will be greatly appretiated. Thanks.

hmm roger penroses newest or 2nd newest book is decent...its like a reference book because it gives references to everything...perhaps its what your looking for.
it should be in any chapters. Its a white book...i believe its the "Road to Reality"
but its like 60$ CDN

A reference for what? The whole undergraduate course, or just parts of it?

i think he's looking for a reference guide for senior level physics courses...

What field of Physics (Classical Mechanics, Relativity, etc..) interests you? Do you want just general physics knowledge? i recommend Resnick and Halliday.
