Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around software options for assistance in physics, mathematics, and circuits, with a focus on tools that complement textbooks and enhance learning.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about software that can aid in physics, math, and circuits alongside textbooks.
  • Another participant suggests using computer-algebra-systems (CAS) like Mathematica or Maple for detailed algebra, integration, and graphic tools.
  • A question is raised about the nature of the tools provided by these software options, specifically whether they show step-by-step solutions or just final answers when performing functions like differentiation.
  • A participant mentions having a CAS on their TI-89, indicating familiarity with such tools.
  • There is a comparison question regarding which software is superior: Maple 10 or Mathematica 5.2.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying opinions on the capabilities of different software, and there is no consensus on which software is better or how they function in terms of educational support.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully explored the specific features of each software, and there are assumptions about the capabilities of CAS that remain unverified.

Does anyone know any software I can use to get help in physics, math, and circuits. I need to use these along with my textbooks.

Physics news on Phys.org
Both provide detailed algebra, integration, and graphic tools
When you say tools, what do you mean. Are they tools for doing math fuctions like:
diff(x^2+2,x) or are they educational. WHen you enter a fuction in Mathematica, like one to differentiate an equation, does it just pop out the answer, or does it show the steps. I remeber seeing a website that shows steps when you enter and equation. I think they were using web Mathematica.

Wow, that website you gave has a plethora of data. Thanks.

I already have a CAS on my TI-89.
