"Fresh" from a concretion that is "fresh" from the matrix (soaking wet), it's very much like cheap (poorly washed) al dente pasta --- a crumbly limp noodle. Calling it wood is a bit of a stretch; appears to be more the lignin residue from hydrolysis and leaching of the cellulose from the splinters and shards that were buried, but still exhibits wood grain and "splinters" along the grain like wood.
