I have always heard that big enough is good enough.
Much like a rope for a rappeller, if it's not long enough to get the job done, it doesn't matter how skilled you are. It's always nice to have a bit of extra rope. Too much rope starts to get in the way. Different cliffs need different lengths of rope.
