magnetic shell parameter

I am reading a book but it does not explain this very well and I cant find an explanation online.

"The magnetic shell parameter, L shell, is an effective mean equatorial radius of a magnetic field shell, which, for a given field strength, B, defines the trapped-particle flux in the space about the Earth."
