Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around identifying programs or methods to monitor the power usage of computers, including both laptops and desktops. Participants explore various approaches, including software solutions and hardware options, while considering different definitions of power usage.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about programs for monitoring power usage on computers.
  • Another participant suggests that monitoring may require hardware solutions, such as sensors in motherboards or power supplies, and mentions a specific device called "Watts up?" as a potential option.
  • A participant raises a question about the definition of power in this context, indicating that the term may have multiple interpretations.
  • There is a suggestion for Windows XP users to utilize built-in tools in the Control Panel to create logs that may include power consumption tracking.
  • One participant proposes using an external ammeter as a straightforward method to measure electric power usage.
  • A participant shares personal measurements of wattage usage for their computers, noting specific wattage figures and providing a link to details about their systems.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best method for monitoring power usage, with various opinions on software versus hardware solutions and differing definitions of power usage being discussed.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the definitions of power and the capabilities of different operating systems may not be fully addressed, and the discussion includes a mix of personal experiences and suggestions without definitive conclusions.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in monitoring computer power usage, including those looking for software solutions or hardware devices, as well as users of various operating systems seeking to understand their power consumption better.

Does anyone know of any programs that let you monitor how much power your computer is using?

Laptop or desktop ?
I would think something like this might likely have to be a motherboard or power supply option (requires a sensor, which means a hardware item). It would cost money but a device similar to the "Watts up?" could work in a worst case senario;

Depends on how you define power.

Are you using Windows XP?

If so go to
Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Performance
From there you can create logs which track everything going on on your computer. There is probably a counter in there you can add to track power consumption.

If you mean electric power, the best/simplest way is externally with an ammeter.

power usage

Well I measured the wattage usage for my 2 computers and it interesting.
for example my main computer uses only 120 watts when the cpu is idle, just doing nothing with no power saving mode of any type.
My second computer uses 130 watts, but it's funny, it's just basically like a 100 watt light bulb, anyways here is a link http://65.23.133.205/spec/ to what is exactly inside in my computer systems.
