is gibbs free energy useful criteria?

IS gibbs free energy a useful idea to determine if a reaction will proceed or not?
Even if gibbs free energy is negative reaction may not happen if activation energy is pretty high right?
Also if gibbs free energy is positive reaction could happen if molecules have enough internal energy to drive the reaction right?
